Downtown Redmond Link Extension

Redmond, WA

The Downtown Redmond Link Extension builds new light rail from the Redmond Technology Station, opening in 2023, to downtown Redmond by 2024. Light rail will travel along SR 520 with stations in southeast Redmond near Marymoor Park and in downtown Redmond. This project is part of the voter-approved Sound Transit system expansion to add 94 more miles of light rail throughout the region. This extension provides direct service to Overlake, Bellevue, Mercer Island, downtown Seattle, the University of Washington, Northgate, and Lynnwood. Max travel time would be 72 minutes to Sea-Tac and 69 minutes to Lynnwood.

Stacey Witbeck / Kuney JV (SWK) was contracted by Sountransit with a full Design-Build of the project to meet Soundtransit’s, City of Redmond’s, Microsoft’s and WSDOT’s requirements. SWK has tasked multiple contractors on the project to perform specific scopes of work in which they contracted Tunista Construction to be responsible for all the Storm Utilities on this 3.5 mile long project. The installation of the storm helps with the flow of the storm water throughout this project after the disruption and placement of these new facilities and flatwork throughout the project.

Throughout the project Tunista needed to provide constant coordination with other subcontractors on the project to ensure both parties are able to be as efficient as possible. To mediate this Tunista set up meetings through with SWK to coordinate with the other subcontractors confirming who needed to be in the area first, if they needed to be in the area of the other or not, and assisting with other material movement throughout the project. Another hurdle on the project was the material shortage stemmed from COVID-19. Because of these material shortages Tunista needed to order large quantities and store offsite to ensure that there were enough materials for installation to not delay the project.
